American Modular Provider Tutorial: What is Modular Construction?

2022-05-06T00:28:12+00:00

A dark red postcard of a modular house sitting on top of a black and white floor plan. The paper sticking out on top of the postcard has the words, “American Modular Provider Tutorial: What is Modular Construction?” and the logo of Aries of the red Ram and the words Aries written next to it.

When we think of construction, a stereotypical image usually pops into our heads. It includes a scene crowded with heavy machinery, workers in hard hats, and the overwhelming reality that it takes a significant amount of time to arrive at the finished product. However, the way our homes and businesses are built is starting to change. Modular construction is taking the world by storm. The classic image of people in vests and hard hats is likely to remain the same, but almost every other aspect of construction will transform.

So, what is modular construction?

Let us begin with the basics such as the reason why this form of construction differs from traditional methods. Modular construction involves building an entire structure away from the location where it will reside permanently. In other words, the building will be constructed elsewhere, and then it will be later assembled at the building site. Imagine a Lego building made with hundreds of blocks. This may sound impossible or unsafe, but modular construction is done with the same material as traditional buildings. Moreover, modular buildings are held to the same standard of code as any other building – and often even more stringency is applied to quality and safety due to the fact that modular buildings are delivered and must withstand extra strength to travel.

How is all of this done?

The first step is to have a team of designers come together to create both exterior and interior plans. This includes following local building codes and zoning regulations. Once the design is finalized and approved, manufacturing of the modules can start. All modules go through an off-site construction process in a controlled setting.

: A depiction showing a construction site and four men working using Lego bricks.

The process involves everything from putting up the walls, to installing the carpeting, the plumbing, and electrical components. Everything is done in the factory, and any work at the site is done at the exact same time. From there, the modules are packaged and sent to be delivered to their permanent address. A crane will then lift each module into its designated space to create a brand new building. If you are worried about their resilience, there is no need. Every module is built with transportation in mind. Each individual module can withstand high winds and inclement weather, and together they create an extremely sturdy structure.

Why does modular construction exist?

That may feel like a lot of extra steps to those outside the modular building industry. But the truth is,  prefabricated buildings are more sustainable, and more cost-and-time-effective. If you’ve ever looked around a traditional construction site, it is impossible to keep a nice aesthetic. Let’s face it: traditional construction is messy. There is dust and debris everywhere, and often there are random piles of material stacked in a corner. That raw material is often leftover or unusable and is essentially trash. In fact, almost a third of the material used on any construction site will end up in a landfill. Modular buildings do not have to contend with the these problems because the material is often shared with other projects in the same factory.

A dirty interior construction site with materials scattered haphazardly all over the floor.

But the greatest advantage of portable buildings is what is saved in time and money. There is no need to contend with the weather or inspectors that can and does cause delays in construction. Less time spent on a building also means less money spent. Additionally, any initial investments will receive a faster turnaround date.

Really, there are endless benefits to modular construction. Since so many people are hopping onto this trend, they are also looking for the best modular building company. Aries is the top modular building provider in North America. How to Choose Your Next New/Used Modular Building

2024-05-01T13:46:33+00:00

An image of a clipboard slanted to the right on a dark wooden table with a red pencil sitting on top. A piece of paper that has text that reads, “How to Choose Your Next New/Used Modular Building” and the Aries’ logo written in black with a ram in dark red to the left of the text.

Are you in the market for a modular building? Great! This article is intended to help you make informed decisions about the features your building will need depending on your industry. No matter what the building’s end use will be, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind and prepare for!

Is it permanent or temporary modular building unit?

— Have a plan for how long you want to utilize the modular building. Depending on your timeframe, it might be more appropriate to rent or lease-to-own instead of outright purchase. Remember, modular buildings depreciate faster than one traditionally built, meaning you can get your ROI sooner! How? If you’re looking for a relocatable building in the U.S., tax laws allow taxpayers to claim a depreciation relief for the decline in value of their assets – and the quicker the asset depreciates, the quicker you can claim the asset and recoup your investment.

ALWAYS check your local town and zoning laws.

— You don’t want to move forward until you are intimately familiar and plan to adhere to them. Note: Companies like Aries are happy to assist customers in acquiring necessary documents issued by a local government agency or building department certifying your building’s compliance with applicable building codes and other laws. In fact, the best modular building companies will make sure you have any permit requirements needed to satisfy the appropriate approval agency; including special foundation systems, ramps, fire alarm systems, etc.

Know your location.

— Carefully survey the area you want to place your building. Will a concrete foundation be required? If you’re in a location where it will snow, you will require a deeper foundation and a roof capable of heavier loads than a building where there isn’t snow.

When going modular, there are many things to consider — electricity, water connections, septic systems, and leveling the land. Aries has a full design and engineering team that can assist customers throughout the entire process.

What Is modular construction?

Modular construction is when a building is constructed offsite. It uses the same materials, same codes, and same standards as conventional construction, but it’s done in half the time under controlled settings. Modular construction can be either permanent or relocatable. Permanent modular construction (PMC) is when the buildings are completed offsite, transported to the final building site, and assembled on a foundation. Relocatable buildings (RBs) are partially or fully assembled buildings that comply with codes and regulations, constructed offsite, then transported to the building site. They are designed to be reused and repurposed multiple times and are not permanently affixed.

Modular buildings are flexible. They allow you to contract and expand space quickly, minimize operation disruption, have a low environmental impact, and maximize construction budgets. Building offsite in a well-controlled factory means no site disruption, improved safety and security while building, and eliminates many of the construction hazards that conventional construction can experience.

Modular units may also be designed to fit in with external aesthetics of any existing building and modular units once assembled can be virtually indistinguishable from a site-built structure.

MODULAR BUILDINGS FOR WORKFORCE HOUSING

Providing a clean and functional living space is a top priority when seeking accommodations for your workforce. Aries’ sister company — Aries Residence Suites — is a full-service provider of workforce housing focusing on quality, value, comfort, and service. We understand the large-scale housing needs of oil field and energy companies, seasonal workers, and other remote labor industries.

: A photograph of a covered wooden boardwalk connecting several aligned blue and white modular units both on the left and right with the Aries’ logo and phone number printed on a sign. The phrase, “WORKFORCE HOUSING MODULAR BUILDING” is in white text on the bottom right.

Aries takes great pride in meeting those needs with our experienced team of engineering, manufacturing, facility management, and sales professionals. We are here to deliver your workers a home away from home. Besides having existing extended stay locations within the U.S., Aries is also able to customize any workforce housing project to suit your location and needs.

Things to consider when buying or leasing relocatable workforce housing:

  • Can my workforce housing modular units be delivered within the time frame I need?
  • Do the modular communities come with additional options such as turn-key services like food service, cleaning service, and waste management?
  • Do my modular housing units come with maintenance contracts?
  • Are the units high-quality and comfortable?

MOBILE BUILDINGS FOR COMMERCIAL USE

A photograph of an off-white modular building with reflective orange construction poles around the building’s stairs and ramps under a beautiful blue-hued sky. There is a covered rollaway ramp parked next to the building. The phrase, “COMMERCIAL MODULAR BUILDING” is in white text on the bottom right.

Whether it be an office building expansion or a full retail space, you’ll want to ensure that you’re providing a clean, aesthetically pleasing space. Retail and hospitality industries can plan on earlier occupancy, giving them a faster return on investment when they choose to go modular. Buildings can be designed to look and function as traditional facilities.

For commercial buildings, it is advisable to include features like reflective membrane roof finishing, prime insulation, and efficient air conditioning units.

It can cost more upfront, but in the lifespan of your use, these features will keep maintenance costs way down. Employee productivity goes up when given an open, naturally-lit working environment. Dedicate a lot of space for your employees to maneuver around in.

Things to consider when buying or leasing my mobile building for commercial use:

  • Do I need new mobile construction, or should I consider used modular building inventory?
  • Will I be best served investing in a permanent or temporary structure?
  • Will I eventually need multiple locations and expansion ability?

MOBILE BUILDINGS FOR EDUCATION

Is the student population growing larger than your classroom space? Have no fear! Modular classrooms offer affordable and quick solutions. Modular buildings bring with them no disruption to students and staff because they are built offsite. They can be designed to “fit in” with your existing facilities’ exterior materials and color.

Giving students an aesthetically pleasing and functional learning facility increases productivity and retention — things like having higher ceilings, attractively painted walls, and great natural lighting.

A photograph of a modular educational building under a blue sky. In front there is green grass lined with sidewalks and bike racks. The phrase, “EDUCATIONAL MODULAR BUILDING” is on the upper right of the photo.

For a more optimized and excellent learning space, noise distractions from the outside should also be controlled using soundproof wall systems. These features will add little to the overall cost but will significantly increase the value of the building, both to your students and potential resale value.

Things to consider when buying or leasing my mobile building for educational use:

  • Do I need new, or should I consider buying used modular classrooms and buildings?
  • Is this permanent or temporary, and does it need to be relocatable?
  • How customized does it need to be?
  • Should I consider a “piggyback contract” (bypass bidding)?
  • Is the modular classroom DSA-approved?

Aries has the best to offer when it comes to modular buildings in the educational sector – whether it be modular classrooms, portable administrative offices, relocatable gyms or cafeterias… the list goes on! Offering quick delivery of portable classrooms for K-12 schools and universities, Aries is North America’s premier modular industry supplier of full turnkey solutions from design and logistics through leasing and financing.

MOBILE BUILDINGS FOR HEALTHCARE

A photograph of a medical examination room with equipment hanging on the wall and a leather table placed beside the wall. The phrase, “HEALTHCARE MODULAR BUILDING” is on the bottom right.

Although patients’ needs are urgent, you should NEVER skimp on the details in a rush to meet demand when you need to expand. It is essential to know the ultimate goal your healthcare space is trying to accomplish.

The quality and safety of your portable healthcare buildings are paramount. They are under stringent codes and regulations. You’ll want to make sure your modular clinic is well insulated but be cautious about your insulation type! Porous insulation can support microbial growth.

Second, specialized medical equipment is heavy — when ordering, make sure that the floor can support all the weight. Floor load capacity depends on the material used to make the floor and the foundation underneath. Lastly, installing an HVAC system that allows you to control zoning, air filtration, and humidity is a must-have in a medical environment.

Things to consider when buying or leasing my mobile healthcare building:

  • Do I need new, or should I consider used inventory?
  • Is this permanent or temporary, and does it need to be relocatable?
  • How customized does it need to be?
  • Is the modular space company GSA-approved?

Are you looking to build a doctor’s office, medical laboratory, or fully-functional hospital? Aries has customizable modules and an expert team of engineering professionals to help you achieve the best modular healthcare facility that meets all your requirements.

MOBILE BUILDINGS FOR INDUSTRIAL USE

When using a modular building in an industrial setting, safety and precaution are your chief concerns.

A photograph of two modular building under a blue sky. The modular buildings are resting on a grassless field. The phrase, “INDUSTRIAL MODULAR BUILDING” is in white text on the upper left.

To achieve an industrial modular building that’s safe and workable, many considerations are essential to watch for. When it comes to fire safety, one should never cut corners. The cost difference between ½ inch thick sheetrock and flame-retardant sheetrock is minimal, but implementing additional safety is invaluable. Making sure the soundproofing is good is key to keeping your employees happy and productive. Lastly, dust and other debris are often kicked up in industrial settings. You’ll want to be sure that your HVAC unit’s filters are constantly replaced to maintain acceptable air quality.

Things to consider:

  • Does the modular company have experience with location permits of site installation services for utilities?
  • Does the modular company provide a warranty?
  • Is the modular unit weather-prepared?
  • Do I require customizations such as blast-resistance or additional pandemic safety measures?

Luckily for you, Aries modular buildings are sturdier and more reliable than those traditionally built. From construction trailers to GLO’s, we’ve got you covered. (Check out GLO floor plans here!)

Aries is proud to be a General Services Administration (GSA) approved vendor for modular buildings for more than 16 years. We are fully capable of meeting the stringent budget and time sensitive needs of different branches of government agencies looking to expand using GSA approved modular buildings.

On the left side of the image is text that reads, “Modular Buildings” and under that is much smaller text that reads, “Educational. Medical. Administrative. Commercial. Industrial. Emergency. Multi-family Housing.” The Aries’ logo is below that with Aries’ contact information and the logo of Inc. 500 on the bottom left.

Uses for Mobile Office Trailers

2022-07-11T19:16:44+00:00
Above a wooden desk strewn with work elements (calculators, phones, tablets, newspapers, pens, and laptops) the hands of four people meet in a friendly fist bump.

The world is buzzing about how modular office buildings bring the flexible design to an industry designed for turnkey solutions and speed. Technology has become a significant component of modular’s conquest of many sectors, from touchless temperature readings to smartboards and game rooms. Today, mobile office trailers can be found in healthcare, classrooms, and everything else! That’s the new modular way.

Modular Offices: Modular Medical

A picture of the length of a clean, well-lit hallway in a hospital with many closed doors on either side.

Recently, modular medical buildings have been in the news for their creation speed. The delivery of an 800-bed modular hospital in England took two weeks. Other countries have accomplished similar feats. However, speed is just part of the equation. Quality, longevity, and clean environments ultimately determine the success of modular medical buildings.

With the help of healthcare providers, the modular industry can deliver maternity wards, radiology departments, and surgical suites. Although each of these comes with a unique set of requirements, they all demand strict adherence to hygiene protocols. Through factory-controlled manufacturing, modular buildings quickly deliver these lifesaving buildings while exceeding all safety protocols.

Modular Offices: Construction Offices

A photograph of an excavator and a bulldozer, the excavator is further away and up on a large mound of dirt. They both sit ready to work on a red dirt site with a sky full of big clouds above and behind them.

Construction offices are a staple of outdoor worksites. Increasing efficiency and safety, work offices on the Jobsite allow workers a place to take a break away from the elements and grab a cup of coffee or water. In addition, it allows engineers to meet with clients and other interested parties on-site. Best of all, construction offices can be set up in as little as 24 hours, even while considering specific needs such as high-security doors or extra storage for equipment.

Leasable and moveable, mobile office trailers continue to be an essential part of the construction industry’s success.

Modular Offices: Classrooms

School administrators are magicians in making things work. However, an unexpected influx of students can severely test a school’s ability to adapt. In addition to space needs, the desire for innovative and attractive rooms can also factor into a school’s decision to buy modular classrooms. As many school districts have turned to the modular industry, the benefits are clear: fast set-up times that don’t interfere with learning, low-cost for quality buildings as well as turnkey solutions that come ready to go with the school’s predetermined needs.

Take the COVID crisis, for instance. Modular buildings allowed schools to set up touchless temperature gauges, sliding doors, as well as sanitation points. Along with projectors, chairs, desks, good ventilation, and a bright, clean environment prevented disturbance in students’ learning objectives.

Modular Offices: Workforce Housing

A setting sun paints the sky red, purple, and orange and leaves a large oil drill in the shadows surrounded by darkness.

It’s hard enough being away from home and family without having to “rough it” for long periods at a time. Modular workforce housing aims to create a “home away from home” for workers by offering them simple comforts and plenty of leisure activities. In addition to the neighborhood housing that can function alongside work offices and conference spaces, modular workforce housing includes game rooms and large-screen TVs. Buildings are multifunctional and can serve as medical needs and executive housing.

Above all, many modular providers, including Aries, now offer fully-staffed personnel for housekeeping, food services, and maintenance.

Modular Offices: Storage Containers

Storage is a fact of life. That’s why the best modular building companies offer stackable, moveable storage space for short-term or long-term needs. These mobile office trailers can be climate and humidity controlled. It can also have added security. Bought or leased, and in different sizes, these modular buildings come tailored fit for clients.

Modular Offices: Ground Level Offices

At a rectangular table, four open laptops face toward workers dressed in casual wear, with dry erase markers and a smartphone also visible on the table.

Modular construction experts know that foresight is necessary to keep modular projects on time and in order. Therefore, the best modular building companies take the time to talk to their clients and understand the project ahead. There are truck routes to examine, terrain to look at, and special needs to consider.

GLOs are all about convenience, time, and coming through for the customer. All ground-level office building processes are coordinated from start to finish. This is to ensure no setbacks. There are a variety of pre-selected floor plans. As a result, clients can get their project rolling without inconvenience.

The New Modular Industry

It’s not just about the quality, the flexible financing options, or the reduced project times and cost savings. The new modular industry thrives on simply being the best quality solution for enterprises, from healthcare to education. At Aries, every customer is assigned a one-on-one professional to walk through the process with our clients. In short, the end result is perfect buildings explicitly designed for the customer.

What to Expect: World of Modular 2022

2022-04-06T18:31:12+00:00
Back of speaker in a suit, gesturing with their left hand while speaking to an out of focus audience in the background. In the upper left is text that reads 2022 World of Modular Annual Convention & Tradeshow.

PLAY WHILE LEARNING?

Have fun while attending a global event? Yes please! Welcome to the 2022 World of Modular Annual Convention and Tradeshow. From April 25th to April 28th in San Antonio, Texas, there will be four days of the industry’s best in modular construction open to the public and to professionals. Whether you’re familiar with modular construction or not, this event will make you rethink what modular can be. With attendees and presenters from across the world such as Europe, South Korea, and Canada to more domestic participants from California, Washington DC, and Texas, this is a networking bonanza that educates and promotes while keeping you on the cutting edge of tomorrow’s technologies. If you need to research commercial modular builders, this tradeshow is your resource. Let us take you on a brief tour of what you can expect at 2022 WOM.

WHAT TO KNOW

The World of Modular is presented by the Modular Building Institute (MBI), an international non-profit trade association that focuses on modular construction. Comprised of members that specialize in permanent modular construction, relocatable modular buildings, and related services, MBI brings the world of modular together.

This year, for the first time, MBI’s 2022 WOM convention has a digital option. Whether you’re registering for digital attendance or for the in-person experience, check out their agenda to get an inside peek at the invaluable educational experience and expertise that you will have access to.

Blurred background photo of a conference room. At the left is an in focus, close-up of a microphone and on the lower right is a ram’s head logo in red and in black letters the word “Aries.”

GET EDUCATED, GET INFORMED

While the list of keynote and featured speakers is expansive, equally are the topics, ranging from the housing crisis, performance metrics of modular technologies and applications, to the evolution of policies, industrialization trends, and so much more. With so much to choose from, where should you start?

We suggest starting with Anirban Basu, chairman and CEO of Sage Policy Group, Inc. Basu is the James Bond of analytics and the Agatha Christie of economic trends, and if you read his full bio, those last two statements will make more sense. One of Washington DC’s premiere economists, recognized as one of Maryland’s 50 most influential people, and Baltimore’s 20 most powerful business leaders, Mr. Basu also teaches at Johns Hopkins and has authored Modular Building Institute’s “Economic & Financial Performance of Relocatable Buildings in the U.S. Modular Building Industry.” He understands supply, demand, and the impact of strategic decisions on a community and industry. His presentation on “Construction Drivers and Trends for 2022” is a must. Featured alongside some of the industry’s most forward-thinking innovators, his in-depth knowledge is a great starting point for all your interests in modular construction and explains why Aries Modular Buildings would sponsor him.

What makes Aries the expert on who should be a speaker at WOM?

Need a mobile office? Aries has you covered. Need more breathing space for your growing school? Aries has that too. A recent case study (link to Holy Catholic School Case Study) illustrates just how effective Aries’ end-to-end services can accommodate those needs. Need a temporary emergency unit, a permanent government facility, or something more custom? That’s right, Aries is here for you. Aries is a modular building provider that offers full turnkey solutions with exceptional customer service and robust financing options. They offer quotes on modular projects of any kind. That’s what they do,  they provide space.

Plus, they’ve been one of the sponsors for the World of Modular for a fourth year in a row and with good reason. WOM is a great opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and learn from industry experts. Aries is in good company with near 30 companies taking an interest in sharing and solving some of the world’s most pressing issues. All while having fun!

NOW HAVE SOME FUN

All work and no play… not at this convention. On the first day, there is a golf tournament followed by an opening party in the evening. On the following days, don’t forget to visit the Exhibit Hall. If you’re looking for materials or services or just want to network, the exhibit hall is a valuable tool. What’s more, you can participate in several entertaining games for a chance at the Grand Prize. Maybe it’s cash, a recreational vehicle, or a trip; the prize changes every year. Either way, WOM is not dull.

A dark-haired entertainer on stilts in a long black dress wearing giant blue cellophane-looking butterfly wings is in the right foreground. Modular Building Institute’s logo is projected on curtains at the left side of the back wall.

On the final evening, don’t miss the awards banquet where WOM celebrates those that have made remarkable achievements in the modular construction industry. With an independent panel of experts judging in various categories such as:

  • Best of Show
  • Permanent Modular
  • Relocatable Modular
  • Green Building
  • Renovated Reuse
  • Judge’s Choice

With over a dozen sub-categories to be found under both permanent and relocatable modular, the awards banquet is wide-ranging and far-reaching. Winners not only earn prestige, they also are featured in MBI’s global marketing efforts, including a magazine, throughout the year.

HAVE MORE FUN

After all of that, is there any need for more? Of course, there is! This year’s convention is at La Cantera Resort & Spa, a luxury resort nestled in the Hill Country of San Antonio. This property has seemingly endless amenities to keep you entertained. In addition to the aforementioned golf tournament, you have access to a tennis and pickle ball court, there are nine bars and restaurants on property to choose from, five resort pools, a spa and wellness center, a fitness center, and running trails.

If you are looking for something more and are itching to get off property, catch a shuttle to the San Antonio Zoo, the theme park Six Flags, or San Antonio’s Riverwalk. Visit nearby Hill Country wineries, experience 300 years of Texas at The Alamo or go to The Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge wildlife park just 20 minutes away. Off property or on, the 2022 World of Modular Annual Convention and Tradeshow offers plenty of play while learning.

The Healthcare Industry and Modular Medical Facilities

The Healthcare Industry and Modular Medical Facilities — A Long History

Amid the hustle and bustle of medical history, building quality has taken a prominent role in saving lives. In this arena, modular medical buildings have often shown they are up to the task. The first prefabricated hospitals debuted in the mid-1800s during the Crimean War after the plea of Florence Nightingale (pictured below) for better field hospitals. Designed for ventilation and sanitation, these field hospitals reduced mortality rates of patients from 12% at the previous buildings to less than 1%.

A sketch of Florence Nightingale with a head covering wearing an elegant period dress with loose sleeves and a voluminous skirt.

In 2021, prefabricated hospitals once again came to the forefront of attention as the world fought to expand its hospital capacity amid the COVID pandemic. Chinese workers built a hospital of 269,000 square feet in two weeks, delivering 1,000 beds. A brand new modular hospital was built in England in the same time slot with 800 beds.

The nearly two centuries between the first and last modular hospitals have proven the quality of modular buildings, and their importance for alleviating the pressures hospitals face, from space constraints to financial difficulties, to the unpredictable changes in demand.

The Healthcare Industry and Modular Medical Facilities — A Diverse History

Modular hospitals make the front page especially when they help alleviate a large-scale crisis. Yet, modular medical facilities take on diverse roles within the daily life of medical care facilities, they are not just reserved for emergencies. From dialysis rooms, to pharmaceutical buildings, to research laboratories, dental offices, multiuse modular and veterinary clinics, modular medical facilities go far beyond the testing labs that have cropped up during COVID and the need for lightning fast solutions.

The proliferation of modular medical facilities comes about as the modular industry has modernized and become more versatile. Medical facilities require very specialized components, and the modular industry has adapted to accommodate the necessities of buildings as varied as obstetric clinics, radiology departments, and surgical rooms. As the healthcare industry reaches a critical mass in terms of demand for these specialized units, the modular industry has become ever more prepared to offer them with the cost and time efficiencies inherent to the industry.

The Healthcare Industry and Modular Medical Facilities — The Advantages

Modular hospitals provide the healthcare industry with all the traditional advantages of modular building. Because the foundations are placed simultaneously with the manufacturing of the structures off-site, modular construction reduces construction times compared to traditional construction. The assembly line nature of modular construction further reduces building times while also providing quality safeguards. This can amount to millions of dollars of savings for hospitals.

Like with other industries, modular also provides the healthcare industry a wider gamut of financing options than traditional construction. Along with the speed & low collateral construction effects, and cost savings, modular financial options provide hospitals a potential savings decisions.

The Healthcare Industry and Modular Medical Facilities — The Future

As modular buildings get smart upgrades – tech giants like Facebook and Google have begun investing in modular buildings. They will shed negative stereotypes and help transform the healthcare industry. Patients in isolated areas of the country will receive attention at local hospital branches without heading towards central population hubs. Modular will also give patients a chance at more personalized and specialized care. A care that is unhindered by the amalgamation of overhead costs in one large, central hospital building. Altogether, portable healthcare for sale and lease has the potential of lowering costs of healthcare.

Custom Modular Classroom Case Study

2023-03-14T17:44:27+00:00
Exterior view of the Catholic School. A large metallic cross sculpture is on green grass in the lower left corner framed by a circular walkway that leads off to two buildings in the background on the right and a line of trees to the left.

Austin, Texas, is currently the fastest-growing urban city, considering the impact COVID has had recently. According to the latest U.S. Census report, there has been a steep incline in population growth within the past twenty years, a 21% increase within the last decade alone. The city has had at least a 4% birthrate near the national average. This kind of information is necessary for the Austin Independent School District in planning the city’s projected educational needs. Although COVID concerns have depressed AISD’s public school enrollments, charter and private schools have seen an uptick.

With the pandemic demanding safer space solutions, overcrowded classrooms become problematic. Coupled with steady annual growth in student population, the issue becomes exacerbated. Such was the case for this Private Catholic School.

Interior panoramic view of a new modular classroom at Holy Family Catholic School with student backpacks and books at the desks spaced far apart.

THE PROBLEM

Seven Catholic parishes are growing quickly that feed into and support this Catholic School. With a desire to provide a school that “works with parents to nurture the whole child’s growth — spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically,” this Catholic School was established in 2000 to meet the community’s needs.

“…we believe in educating the whole child: heart, mind, body, and soul.” – Principal of the Catholic School.

Starting with 158 students and a staff of 18, the school consisted of eight portable buildings temporarily housed at one of the local parishes. The following year, the campus moved to a 20-acre plot within the Texas Hill Country. However, it wasn’t until recently, with their student body reaching over 650 from Pre-K to eighth grade, that Phase II of their mission came to fruition. In desperate need of additional space, the school investigated modular solutions, having previous experience with portable buildings in their early years.

Interior photo of the Catholic school’s modular staff lounge. Wood doors on the left and right, gray carpeted floors, gray wood-grain tabletop in the foreground with three blue chairs. In the background against the wall is a row of wooden cabinets with a microwave, sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, and garbage can.

THE SOLUTION

There can be a lot of trepidation around prefabricated buildings if you are new to the concept. However, portable buildings are a common solution for overcrowded educational facilities. Already familiar with the benefits this type of modern construction can offer, by way of their original eight buildings, the school turned to Aries Building Systems to help bring in Phase II of their mission.

As with most schools, budget-friendly is a necessity. There are cost savings to modular buildings in lieu of brick and mortar. Plus, the school needed specific design aspects to be taken care of so the new buildings would seamlessly blend with the old brick and mortar buildings already on the campus. Aries was able to provide this service for even more cost savings. Typically, there is also a time-saving in modular construction versus traditional construction. However, the pandemic handicapped all construction, and the industry is still recovering as are many businesses. The pandemic was just one more challenge to overcome.

Nevertheless, Aries Buildings delivered 31 modules, 100% modular, and 100% completed before leaving the factory. Over 11,000 square feet of one-story buildings were added to the existing campus. The buildings were being built at a facility at the same time that work was underway to prepare the property. Fortunately, jurisdictional authorities did not require additional or special documentation to install the units.

Design Features of Aries Modular Buildings for School Campus

Aries’ team designed the new custom modular classrooms to match the brick-and-mortar buildings that were previously built when the school was founded. The exterior of the buildings are brick and stucco, with metal roofs, and have storefront quality windows and doors.Parents and students see these custom modular classroom as the first buildings when they enter the campus. The interior consists of kinetic carpet, tape and textured walls, elevated ceilings, and accent walls throughout the custom modular classrooms. With customizable floor plans, a wide array of options was available to meet the customer’s needs.

Aerial photograph of the school campus. Multiple modular buildings connected by a covered walkway on fresh dirt angled across the picture from upper left to lower right, filled out by green grass and trees.

CHALLENGES

The modular buildings were installed in the drainage area of the campus, which required the Aries’ team to develop multiple drainage systems to divert water safely away from the building footprints. The mechanical system was designed and installed under the City of Austin’s environmental requirements to keep the operation costs low, and at the same time be eco-friendly. Green concrete alternatives including Tru-Grid were utilized to minimalize the impervious coverage of the construction to avoid increasing the retention ponds on a tight campus footprint. The Aries’ team worked with the staff at the school to keep the costs in check during the installation amid a pandemic.

Even with these challenges, the Aries’ team was able to design, build, and install modular buildings that match the existing campus, providing different visual elevations that the current facilities did not provide, solved environmental challenges, with a pleasing aesthetic inside and out, and all in time to start the new school year in 2021.

It is projected that Austin, Texas will continue its trajectory of growth. This beloved Catholic School is now prepared for that growth and Aries Building Systems is ready too!

“I invite you to explore our website and learn more about our faith-filled community and I hope to see you on our beautiful campus soon!” – Erin Vu, principal of The Catholic School

Your formal title at Aries

Territory Sales Manager – Colorado and surrounding states

Your job duties & responsibilities–

Build and develop relationships with new and existing customers, vendors and local organizations.  Promote the “Aries” brand and our value proposition.  Sales and leasing of Aries product offerings and services.

How long have you been at Aries?

I started on January 3rd of this year.  Just shy of 2 months.

Where did you work prior to Aries; was it in the same industry or something totally different?

I started in the modular industry in 2016 with Acton Mobile.  I then transitioned to WILLSCOT in 2018.   Prior to the modular industry, I spent 10 years in construction sales with iSqFt.com.

When you’re not at work, what would we find you doing?

I love thrifting.  You will most likely find me at local consignment shops, Goodwill or ARC stores.  I love the idea of repurposing and recycling items.  As the saying goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”

Hometown?

I was born and raised in Grand Island, Nebraska.  I made a move to Colorado in 1988 to pursue bigger opportunities as well as enjoy what Colorado has to offer.

What would “your perfect day” consist of?

A perfect day is waking up with a positive attitude and counting all my blessings.  A day spent with all my family, as we are not able to get together as often as we would like.

What’s your favorite part about working for Aries so far?

From the short time I have been here I have felt a very “family” oriented company culture.  That is to say, the amount of support and help I have received has been amazing and I am very grateful for that.

What sets Aries apart from other companies that deliver the exact same things?

Aries has done an amazing job in creating a “customer” oriented business.  There are other modular companies, but it’s the “AWESOME” customer experience that wins and creates a happy and loyal customer.

What do you hope to bring to Aries in terms of leadership and company culture?

I hope to collaborate with other co-workers on how we can learn from our successes as well as share new ideas within the organization, that will result in growth and the best customer experience.

If you weren’t working for Aries, what job would you probably have?

Working with the local animal shelters in hopes of finding every animal a forever home.  I have spent many years volunteering at the Denver Animal Shelter and found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

What do you think the future holds for Aries?

I think the future for Aries is tremendous growth and becoming the leader in the modular industry.

Is there anything we didn’t bring up that you’d like to talk about?

I am very excited and grateful to be a part of this amazing team! Prepare for greatness……Team Aries is here!

Permanent Modular Construction vs. Relocatable Buildings

2022-03-10T22:43:57+00:00
A photo of the torsos of three people, two wearing working overalls and dark blue shirts and a third in a button-up dress shirt holding a folder and pen. They stand facing each other as though discussing something.

At Aries, we understand the importance of patience and perseverance. However, we also understand that instant solutions can be the difference between success and failure in some things. That’s why we specialize in turn-key solutions to get our clients’ most significant projects rolling towards success. Within our model, we focus on two types of construction: permanent and temporary.

A red and white graphic sign with the word “later” crossed out and “now” written underneath in red.

Permanent Modular Construction vs. Relocatable Buildings:

The Commonalities:

Both permanent and temporary solutions are prefabricated in factories, leading to higher quality, efficiency, and predictability than traditional construction. Again, both permanent and temporary solutions feature modern, custom designs that include fixtures, ramps, doors, and interior finishes. Clients can separate or expand rooms and add sliding doors, glass barriers, screens, projectors, and amenities.

The process is very similar for both, with a dedicated one-on-one professional accompanying clients from concept to delivery. So, what is the difference between the two modular building innovations?

Financing:

When considering a permanent versus non-permanent modular construction, clients should consider the different financial options available with each. Mainly, relocatable buildings give leasing options, offering clients an added layer of flexibility. Also, the materials, preparation, and foundations needed for permanent buildings usually come with added costs, although these typically remain below traditional construction costs. Finally, the depreciation schedule on each type of building can vary, making a difference in reporting company finances.

Flexibility:

Each type of modular building offers flexibility in different areas. Of course, relocatable buildings allow companies the flexibility to use the space as temporary swing space or as an office that moves from Jobsite to Jobsite. Classrooms, construction offices, and storage containers can usually benefit from this characteristic.

However, permanent buildings allow clients to expand existing buildings with new modular components seamlessly. While they can be connected structurally to main buildings, Relocatable buildings usually cannot seamlessly interact with a pre-existing structure in the way permanent buildings can.

Set-up time:

Clients looking for instant solutions can sometimes find themselves in a time scramble. The turn-key solution can be set up and ready to go in as little as 24 hours with relocatable buildings. This can guide their choice between permanent versus temporary modular buildings.

Compared to the blistering timeline of relocatable buildings, permanent buildings can take up to 4 weeks to complete. It’s worth mentioning that the permanent modular building set-up schedule still crushes all traditional competition. The time savings are produced by the assembly line nature of the construction because the foundation and building can both be worked on simultaneously.

The Aries’ formula:

As a big company, with a small company feel, you can rest assured that you will get a human voice when you call our lines. Our process takes clients through a customized process from start to finish that guarantees our clients will find the right solution just for them. We are the trusted modular building provider for North America!

I LOVE MY JOB: The Best Places to Work Often Have the Best Bottom Line

2024-05-02T09:20:35+00:00
A photo of a “Daily News” newspaper laying on a wooden desk with the headline saying, “BEST JOB EVER!!!” and a red Aries’ ram logo behind the exclamation points.

If you’ve ever had a sales job before, I’m sure you have heard of the familiar saying that “the customer is always right.” As nice as that sounds, it is not always true. Successful companies are realizing that they need to put their employees at the top of their priorities too. And most importantly, be one of the best places to work. Having happy employees equates having happy customers, resulting in a successful company.

In order to put this claim into context, a study was conducted to provide causal field evidence for this very relationship. The finding was that happy employees benefit the company.  This study, led by Professor Andrew Oswald, Dr. Eugenio Proto, and Dr. Daniel Sgroi, found that happy employees are 12% more productive while unhappy employees are 10% less productive. According to Dr. Sgroi, happy workers work more efficiently and at an increasing pace while also maintaining quality.

Dr. Andrew Oswald has claimed that successful companies have the best places to work. For instance, Google have increased their employee satisfaction by 37% by investing in employee support and satisfaction which in turn produced happier workers. Google does this by providing more than just pay and benefit packages. Financial stability and job security matters, but so does engagement, growth, sense of value, and purpose.

A photo of a well-spirited group of 7 employees doing a team huddle inside a well-lit office room with brick walls and large windows.

Some argue that happier workers make better leaders.

The founder of Woohoo Inc., Alexander Kjerulf, claimed that, in his own experience, happy workers make better decisions, manage their time excellently, and possess crucial leadership skills.

Another study that proves the importance of happy workers is “The Science of Happiness at Work” by iOpener Institute. The surveyors found that happy employees stay with their companies four times longer and devote twice as much time to their tasks compared to unhappy employees. Also, according to the report, happy employees are 65% more energetic than unhappy ones.

Happy employees make happy customers.

It’s as simple as that and there are plenty of statistics and facts to back this up. Gallup’s “The State of the American Workplace” indicates that how engaged employees are results in better customer relationships, increasing sales by 20%.

Chick-fil-A is one of the most dominant and top fast food chains. The company generates more revenue per restaurant than any other fast food chain in the United States, and even 3 times as much as KFC. What is their secret? Beyond their excellent food, many analysts believe it is their excellent customer service that makes them stand out from other fast food places. Chick-fil-A does this by investing in its employees, keeping them happy, and, above all, being one of the best places to work in.

Your workplace is responsible for creating a setting and culture ideal for achieving happiness at work. But in the end, your happiness at work solely depends on you and you alone. Therefore, it is important to find a workplace that will certainly invest in the wellbeing of its employees and create an ideal work environment in which employees can grow and be appreciated.

Between the two rows is the statement, “Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to others.” The top left has the red ram logo with “Aries” written below. The next picture is of three Aries employees smiling for the camera. The top right picture is of a jack-o’-lantern with “Aries” carved into it and glowing brightly. On the bottom row, the first picture is of an employee relaxing next to a firepit reading a book. The middle picture is of a group of seven Aries’ employees squeezing in for a group photo. The final picture shows two portable buildings with sunset behind them. In the foreground, there is a person warming themselves by a firepit. To the right of the firepit is a basketball hoop awaiting the next day’s pickup game.

Katie Roman, the Senior Vice President of Aries, proudly said this about working at Aries,

“I must admit, sometimes I wake up excited. Literally excited. I’m working a job that I enjoy with people I like spending time with, and a company that brings space solutions to the world. Our mission solves problems and brings people peace of mind. How can I not love my job?!”

Casey Hobbs, Aries’ business development representative stated, “What sets Aries apart is the leadership, employee experience, customer service, and quality product. You are never just a number at Aries, you are a part of a team and that includes our customers.”

We are blessed to have world-class managers on our team who know how to bring out the full potential of their employees. We have had incredible success and growth as a company, which is a direct result of the company’s family atmosphere.
