5 Myth-busting Modular Building Misconceptions

2022-03-03T02:40:49+00:00
A beautiful photo of an array of brown and orange modular house made by Aries around a field of green grass with a white banner on the bottom that says “5 myth-busting Common Misconceptions about Modular Buildings”

Myth 1 — Modular buildings are ugly, gray, square boxes

Quite the opposite actually. Perhaps modular buildings used to be “ugly” (and ugly is subjective anyway). Forward-thinking architects have moved more towards modular building design due to their affordability and sustainability. Also, the sleek geometric lines and simplicity of style have come to represent sophistication but also an artistically stylized expression of contemporary architecture. To date, there are modular hotels, barns, and emergency rooms. There’s even a contemporary music venue made out of modular buildings in Switzerland, designed by Savioz Fabrizzi Architectes.

Myth 2 — Modular means temporary

While it’s true to say that some modular buildings are specifically temporary solutions, Aries Buildings sells modular buildings that have been constructed according to permanent building standards. The working lifespan (under current building guidelines) is between 60 and 100 years. Temporary modular structures are best for quick set-up and tear down, and they work well in situations when people need a quick housing solution, for example during disaster relief. Permanent structures are durable and can be built with concrete floors, a roof canopy, and other more permanent amenities.

Myth 3 — Modular buildings have bouncy floors

When I was in high school, we didn’t call them modular classrooms, we called them portable buildings (“portables”). I vividly remember walking into my physics’ portable every morning and feeling like I had just entered a bouncy castle. During class, I was mesmerized by Dr. Meyers, who seemingly floated around the room while giving his impossible-to-understand lectures. Well, not anymore. Our inventory (including classrooms!) offers solid floors and we ensure that you can avoid floor vibration.

A bold and dynamic modular apartment design with rows of small, wooden boxes, each of which has a metal railing on the balcony in front of a large window. The tops of the boxed units are painted in striking shades of green, yellow, pink, and blue.

Myth 4 — Modular is a cheap, and therefore a sub-par solution

Modular construction is more cost-effective than on-site construction, that’s one of the reasons it’s so popular. With Aries, it’s also less expensive than the alternative. Does that mean it’s cheap? Of course not! We all know that inexpensive and cheap are two completely different things. Aries offers affordable modular solutions, while at the same time we strive to maintain sound design and quality construction for a long-lasting and comfortable home, office, classroom, et al.

Myth 5 — Modular buildings are cold in winter, overly hot in summer

Quality insulation is key to ensuring a comfortable internal environment, whether it’s hot or cold. As a Texas-based company, Aries understands the necessity of top-quality insulation to keep the cold air flowing inside during our hot summers. Additionally, after the freeze this past February, we now understand how quality insulation can be lifesaving, especially if it is 9 degrees and you lost your power for 5 days! That is why we offer modular buildings with premium insulation.

According to Forbes Magazine, modular homes and buildings are the future of architecture, and we are on board! Aries is your choice for high quality, commercially designed modular buildings. We specialize in supplying classrooms, offices, storage containers, and remote workforce housing to a wide range of industries and applications across the United States and Canada.

Acquisition Announcement: Aries Welcomes Jobsite Mobile Offices!

2021-09-15T03:27:44+00:00
A faded image of a handshake with a grey transparent banner above declaring, “Acquisition Announcement: Aries Welcomes Jobsite Mobile Offices!” In the middle of the image is the black Aries’ logo with the burgundy ram head on the left side. Below the Aries’ logo is the orange, blue, and white logo of Jobsite Mobile Offices.

Aries Building Systems is an award-winning modular space provider specializing in supplying full turnkey man camps, remote workforce housing, and commercial modular buildings to an extensive scope of industries and applications across the U.S. and Canada. As part of its growth strategy, Aries intends to expand within the modular industry through acquisitions and internal expansion. On July 8th, 2021, Aries announced its newest addition, Jobsite Mobile Offices.

Jobsite Mobile Offices is a Midwest-based, family-owned manufacturer of mobile and modular field offices that cater to the construction, industrial, and other B2B industries. Jobsite started in 1971 in north-central Indiana, and as their various services and reputation grew, so did their customer base. Since its founding, Jobsite Mobile Offices has built virtually all types of mobile and modular buildings, from temporary guard shacks to multi-story permanent buildings. Throughout Jobsite’s 50-year history, they have maintained a top-to-bottom approach encompassing everything from manufacturing, servicing, and financing, as well as employing only the finest and most experienced employees.

Jobsite offers a broad scope of mobile and modular offices, such as standard mobile offices that come with all the features and amenities an office needs to operate, INDOT or Indiana Department of Transportation offices with all the required specifications (this includes INDOT contracts, municipalities, and other agencies that implement construction contracts utilizing INDOT specifications for field offices), custom design mobile offices, and high-performance mobile offices.

An image of 5 chess pieces with an orange and blueish-violet color of a sunset as the background with the words “Acquisition Announcement” on the image. Above “Acquisition Announcement” are both logos of Aries (left) and Jobsite Mobile Offices (right).

With this acquisition, Aries will gain increased credibility, and the future looks promising. Aries and Jobsite share a common goal of providing modular buildings — mobile offices, storage containers, ground-level offices (GLOs), and specialty modular buildings of any kind — to multiple industries, including, but not limited to, commercial, industrial, education, medical, and oil and gas.

As a result of this acquisition, Aries will gain an additional supplier and extend its customer base, particularly in the Midwest region. For both companies, the partnership is a win-win. Michael Bollero, Jr., President of Aries, said, “This is a very special time for Aries and the modular building industry as a whole. We provide space solutions, and there is no end to the possibilities within our ever-growing industry.” Bollero is very enthusiastic about adding Jobsite Mobile Offices to the company’s growing portfolio, welcoming customers and associates of the company adding, “These new synergies will significantly enhance our ability to serve the community by bringing forth the most innovative modular solutions possible.” According to Bollero, Jobsite fits right along with Aries’ growth strategy and this acquisition demonstrates Aries’ commitment to expanding further.

The Leading Provider of Portable Classrooms

2022-07-22T19:37:41+00:00
A single book, its pages parted and standing up, lays open on a table in the foreground of the picture, out of focus behind the open book are bookshelves filled with books.

The innovative spirit that has always driven humanity forward is alive and well in the modular industry. The modular process combines some of the best features of industrialization: assembly line efficiency, factory-controlled quality, and customer service based on reliability – into the construction industry. For these reasons, modular buildings offer solutions to some of today’s most pressing problems, from the housing crisis to environmental issues.

A computer-rendered drawing of the front of different buildings, a small house, a high-rise building, another house with a front yard and white picket fence, and a square building that looks like a motel, all lined up beside each other on a white background.

The education sector has received an abundance of benefits through modular buildings. The successful integration of portable classrooms into the school system says quite a bit about the potential of these versatile creations.

Let’s begin with the most obvious obstacle schools face: underfunded budgets. With so many different projects vying for the limited funds, schools often look for ways to get the job done less. So, are schools settling for lower quality products to cut costs? Not in this case. Relocatable classrooms create savings through their factory-controlled construction, not through reducing the quality of the building or materials. Through assembly lines, predictable workflows, dependable access to raw materials, as well as avoiding other construction hazards like weather delays and accidents, modular construction reduces costs without sacrificing quality.

The next monumental benefit of modular buildings is the flexibility they provide.

From leasing to buying, schools can tailor their purchases to their circumstance from temporary to permanent. This proves invaluable for school systems dealing with unexpected influxes of students or who simply need relief while a building’s final expansion is underway. During COVID, many schools solved spacing demands by expanding their campuses with portable classrooms.

Kelso School District

This temporary need was true for the Kelso School District, which asked for swing space for Butler Acres Elementary while most of the school was rebuilt (pictured below). As the National Center for Educational Statistics points out, they are just one of many schools that use classroom trailers, up to a third of all schools.

Behind a grassy knoll, a red portable classroom with two doors, ramps with handrails, and two white framed windows sits in front of the main school building and tall pine trees beneath a blue sky with wispy clouds.

But are there any drawbacks to choosing modular classrooms?

In many districts, there are many fears associated with prefabricated buildings. For one, school districts worry about image and parents’ perception when they see portable buildings. On the other hand, parents raise concerns about structural safety, comfort, air quality, and the production design of the overall learning environment. Are any of these concerns well-founded?

A computer-rendered image of a person with no facial features, a dark yellow shirt with a white collar and white cuffs in front of a blue background, and a thought cloud with a blue question mark hovering beside their head.

In some respects, the fears are based on some truth. Not all modular companies provide the same level of customer support, or they refurbish leased buildings well past the optimal life cycle of the building. In addition, school systems, themselves, err when they settle for sub-par products because the modular buildings are a “temporary” addition which will be gone after a cycle. Consequently, they bring buildings onto campus that they ordinarily would not if they thought it was going to be permanent.

Aries

That’s why at Aries, we work on building a relationship of trust with our clients. The best signs of our success are repeat clients who have seen Aries’s quality and workmanship. From aesthetic quality to interior design, a team of experienced professionals works closely with each customer to ensure that the new accommodations meet all the school’s relocatable needs. Furthermore, the modular industry worldwide has taken huge steps in the versatility of their projects. This is no longer a “one size fits all industry,” and schools can customize their classrooms into unique and dynamic designs. The idea that a portable classroom consists of single- and double-wide trailers no longer apply. Even entire complexes is built to meet the school’s needs. Then, the furnished classrooms will have markers, blackboards, desks, and also slew of other necessities to get the school rolling on time.

Every single detail counts in education, and that’s something Aries has learned in their years of experience working alongside schools.

Studies have shown that building design affects everything from student exam scores to emotional resilience to attendance rates. Furthermore, teachers appreciate thoughtful additions. These includes hand sanitizer dispensers built into the wall, air filters, as well as design that reduces ambient noise. At Aries, we work hard to provide the highest quality portable classrooms from beginning to end. That means no waiting from the phone line to phone line. Customers get the best of both worlds. The resources of a large company with the personalized attention of a small company. Furthermore, Aries believes and makes a difference in education and also being the best modular building provider on the market.

Features and Benefits of Modular Building

2024-05-01T13:41:12+00:00
An Aries modular unit being lifted high in the air with a crane.

Like LEGO bricks, modular buildings are structures put together module by module and can be altered, repurposed, and moved as one sees fit. The features and benefits of modular construction have increased its popularity for the past five years. These benefits include environmental friendliness, fast & safe construction, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility.

The Modular Building Institute says, “Modular construction is a process in which a building is constructed off-site, under controlled plant conditions, using the same materials and designing to the same codes and standards as traditionally built facilities – but in about half the time.”

: A green recycle logo with a white background.

Environmentally friendly

The construction industry alone is responsible for almost 39 percent of the world’s carbon emissions. Most of this is from the ineffectual transportation of labor, equipment, and materials to the building site. One of the benefits of modular buildings is reduced carbon emissions by eliminating most transportation needs since everything takes place in a factory.

With traditional construction, almost 56 million tons of unused materials go to waste each year, such as wood, steel, cement, etc. Modular construction uses excess material to make frames, roofs, and sidings. Due to the nature of the building, excess materials are repurposed and recycled.

Faster construction

According to the Census.gov Survey of Construction, a typical on-site construction takes around seven months to almost a year to complete. Delays are common since on-site construction deals with many external factors such as weather, contractors, and inspections. Modular buildings are constructed in a factory, eliminating any potential delays or complications. Modular buildings are built synchronously with the foundation and site work, so the overall build time is faster.

A modular home composed of two modules on the first level and one on top with a large pool in the front. A blue sky with specks of violet clouds and trees is in the background.

Cost-effective

From labor to material cost, a benefit of modular buildings is that it is much more affordable than traditional buildings. Due to the concurrent building of several similar modules, excess materials from previous builds can be reused for future projects — saving material costs. Modular construction gives you a faster return on investment. A modularly built restaurant, for example, can start generating profit almost 50 percent sooner than a traditionally made restaurant.

Safer construction

Due to various hazards, traditional construction can be a risky job. Risks such as falls from height and machine malfunctions can lead to injury and even death. An added benefit of modular building is the reduced accidents, and related hazards since modular construction is off-site. Each module is built and assembled on-site, reducing slip and fall accidents. Weather elements are eliminated, preventing contractors from working on slippery surfaces and other hazardous conditions.

Greater flexibility and reuse

Another benefit of modular buildings is that they are easy to transport from site to site. Not having to demolish a pre-existing building saves you the hassle of acquiring permits, licenses, and other policies of demolition services. According to Alpine Demolition Services, a demolition project can cost as high as 10,000 per contract. Since modular buildings are disassembled rather than demolished, you only have to settle the transportation costs.

Award-Winning Modular Building Provider Aries: Best Employer in Modular Industry

2024-05-02T09:22:50+00:00

A collage including three photos of smiling Aries’ team members working together arranged around the official Aries burgundy “ram head” logo in the top center of the collage.

Getting a job at a great company can be a daunting task. Truly great companies might be few and far between, but they all have similar traits that make them great. The best employer in modular industry will help you spot these common traits to help you land your dream job at a company that is right for you.

MISSION. People with a focused mission work with companies with a focused mission.

Every great company is mission driven. As Simon Sinek, leadership guru, author, and professor, puts it, “If you hire people just because they can do the job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears.” When a company allows their mission and values to navigate them forward, they attract people who share the same beliefs. People who work for mission-driven companies tend to stay longer and feel more satisfied with their job. If you work for these companies, they will not just send you home with a paycheck − but also with a more profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.

REWARD FOR CHALLENGE. Companies willing to rise to the challenge reward their team members for doing the same.

Let’s face it − we’re talking about business, and productivity is, and should be, a top priority. Sadly, some companies don’t show recognition and do not care to incentivize hard work. No matter how big or small the win is, great companies will celebrate it. They will express their gratitude in giving awards, bonuses, promotions, gift cards, and handwritten notes. Zappos, an American online shoe and clothing retailer known for their deep sense of customer service, practices a unique way of recognition. Every employee in Zappos gets 50 dollars to give to a coworker they think deserves it.

LAUNCH TALENT. Instead of assigning jobs and putting people in them, “A” Teams create jobs around talented people.

2017 Talent Trends survey was a survey by Mercer finding that 5,400 employees worldwide desire individuality in the workplace. Instead of hiring you for a position, a great company will create a job that would best cater to your strengths and attributes.

FLEXIBILITY. A company that practices a flexible attitude will have it reflected in a very productive way.

Flexible companies will consider your wellbeing and adjust to your situation. They will respect your time and understand that you have a life outside the workplace. Aries is a great example of a flexible company. Employees feel that Aries respects their work/life balance and understands that their employees must take care of all aspects of their lives before they can give their best at work.

REMOVE TOXICITY. Great companies shield their employees from toxicity.

Work can be pretty challenging. Loving what you do is not enough, you also must be in a healthy environment that you will enjoy being in. Gary Chapman, author of Rising Above a Toxic Workplace, says, “When a workplace becomes toxic, its poison spreads beyond its walls and into the lives of its workers and their families.” A great company will protect you from toxicity and provide you with a healthy work environment by addressing the problem before it progresses. Since great companies promote workplace wellness, they implement policies that can prevent toxicity. These include anti-bullying policies, training that addresses bullying, and disciplinary actions for employees who violate policies.

FRIENDSHIP. Working with a company that genuinely cares about your happiness & success creates a mutual authentic friendship.

Friendships make life beautiful. Since people spend the majority of their lives in their workplace, positive relationships are essential. Katie Roman, senior vice president of Aries Buildings, said this about working with Aries: “I must admit, sometimes I wake up excited. Literally excited. I’m working a job that I enjoy with people I like spending time with and a company that brings space solutions to the world. Our mission solves problems and brings people peace of mind. How can I not love my job?!” When you work with a great company, they will motivate you to build strong relationships through get-togethers, scheduled team building exercises, or simply encouraging employee interactions.

A fall-themed collage of photos of Aries’ team members and leisure activities with words in the middle that says, “Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to others,” and the official Aries burgundy “ram head” logo on the top left.

OPEN COMMUNICATION. Companies that create a safe environment for open communication are unstoppable. Top talent appreciates transparency.

They say communication is the key to a strong relationship. That is why great companies know how to receive feedback and suggestions. They will provide a safe environment for team members to voice ideas and feel heard. Your opinions matter. Companies that promote transparency create strong relationships within the workplace, resulting in high morale and efficiency.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP. This can’t be achieved through clever marketing. It must be REAL. Companies with an authentic, healthy culture will attract the same.

An industry leader is a company that is considered to be the most effective in its industry. They are known for their excellence and expertise. Since they are at the top of their game, they usually have the most experienced, top talent. Landing a job in these companies will allow you to skill up and boost your resumé. Industry leaders often pay well and offer many growth opportunities to deserving team members.

PROVIDE TOOLS. Great companies provide their team members the right tools and technology to show they care by arming them with an easier path to success.

They say you are only as good as the tools you use. A great job entails having the right skill set and the right tools and technology. A great company will not let you march to the battlefield unarmed. Great companies will provide you with everything you need to succeed.

A summer day, a group of four golfers, one wearing a gray golf shirt with an Aries’ logo, stand proudly on a golf course marked with a sign that reads “This hole sponsored by Aries” and Aries’ website address and phone number: www.ariesbuildings.com, 1-888-598-6689.

FUN. Um, hello!? We ALL like to have fun. It needs to be in the workplace, too.

A great company is a fun company. Those that incorporate fun in the workplace have better and more creative employees. Companies like Google incorporate fun by having office perks including music and art studios, mini-golf courses, ping pong tables, climbing walls, and even nap pods. But suppose a company does not offer office perks as prestigious as Google. It does not necessarily mean that they don’t have a fun environment. Google and many other great companies all share the same goal for promoting a fun workplace — they want you to love your job and enjoy what you are doing.

Top Modular Building Company Aries at World of Modular 2021

2023-02-09T19:14:00+00:00
Three “digital brochure” pages: 2021 World of Modular event brochure, Aries “Provider of Total Modular Solutions,” and WOM’s guest speaker lineup.

World of Modular (WOM) tradeshow

There is a vitality and dynamism in the modular industry that bodes well for the future. The tour de force of the industry’s budding power can be found at the World of Modular (WOM) tradeshow, where top modular building companies from all over the world come together to showcase and celebrate their latest achievements. As the largest and longest running modular building tradeshow, The event brings together manufacturers, contractors, and dealers as well as architects, and owner/developers.

Like most other events, this year’s tradeshow will be virtual, but is still expected to deliver on the fireworks. Through the EventMobi app, attendees will be able to comfortably participate in networking, exchange ideas, learn from experts, discuss issues, promote new products, compete in games, win prizes, and receive well-deserved awards and industry recognition.

As an all-encompassing event designed to power the industry into the next year, topics given by industry leaders will run the gamut from “The Industry’s First Prefabrication and Modular Construction Specific Contract Form” to “Evolve or Face Extinction: Why Building Green Will Be the Only Way to Build” and also “How to Build a Hospital During a Pandemic in Just Four Weeks.”

For top modular building companies like Aries, showing up and contributing to this event is a matter of loyalty to our customers and partners. That’s why in 2021, Aries will once again host one of the world’s most recognizable economists, Anirban Basu, as keynote speaker. As Katie Roman, Senior Vice President at Aries, puts it, “We understand the value of networking with our colleagues and promoting modular industries across the board. We look forward to WOM each and every year!”

Outstanding Achievement

In addition, Aries will be anxiously awaiting the results of the many prizes awarded for outstanding achievement. In the past years, Aries has taken top prize in the modular education under 10,000 sq. ft. category and received honorable mentions in the categories of relocatable workforce housing, relocatable administrative buildings, and also locker rooms, and relocatable multi-story educational buildings. With entries from all over the world, the competition is stiff, however, Aries takes confidence in being a leader of creating modern, approachable designs. In short, taking the ordinary and bland and making it extraordinary.

As 2020 proved, it’s impossible to predict what this year will bring. However, by participating in WOM 2021, Aries and other top modular building companies have begun their quest in 2021. This is to continue providing high value, quality buildings, with more technology, better design, and also quicker workmanship than ever before.
