VisionARIES – Q&A with Jim Benedict (Spotlight)

2023-09-01T20:19:03+00:00

Aries Building employee Jim BenedictYour formal title at Aries

Vice President of Sales- RAM Modular Canada

Your job duties & responsibilities:

Business development, sales, operations.

How long have you been at Aries?

4 years.

Where did you work prior to Aries; was it in the same industry or something totally different?

I was introduced to the remote camp/ modular accommodation sector during my 10 years in Sales at SYSCO Foodservice. Building an extensive network and relationships in foodservice selling to camp caterers led me to a career in Modular, and ultimately with RAM Modular Canada.

When you’re not at work, what would we find you doing?

My wife (Brandee) and I spend most of our time volunteering  for my daughter (Makenna) at her local gymnastic club or  as “roadies” for my oldest daughter (Hailey) as she pursues her career as a country singer/songwriter. Otherwise I try to stay active playing flag football, golf or hockey when I get the chance.

Hometown?

St. Albert, Alberta

Family, children?

Married to Brandee for 17 years, 2 daughters, Makenna 14 and Hailey 16.

What would “your perfect day” consist of?

A long term lease award to start the day, followed by a round of golf and spending time with my family.

What’s your favorite part about working for Aries so far?

I appreciate the communication and expertise of the employees and senior management. As the lone Canadian employee I am continually included and supported by everyone in the organization. I also value the confidence and shared vision our senior team has in the Canadian market as we strive to increase our market share.

What sets Aries apart from other companies that deliver the exact same things?

Primarily what sets Aries apart from our competitors is how everyone in the organization performs day to day tasks with purpose, integrity and honesty. Our clients appreciate dealing with a company that is interested in sharing in their success and growing together.

What do you hope to bring to Aries in terms of leadership and company culture?

Canada has been a challenging market over the last 4 years. I hope that our existing clients continue to see the quality and commitment to our brand and to their success and that potential clients understand that they have a competitive, viable option from a company that will work relentlessly on their behalf.

If you weren’t working for Aries, what job would you probably have?

Haha, I don’t think an 18 handicap would put me on the PGA tour so I’m probably exactly where I should be!

What do you think the future holds for Aries?

I believe that the modular business in North America is poised to grow as costs to build permanent structures increase and skilled labour becomes tougher to keep. Institutional, construction and the resource sector are all growing and relying on relocatable structures more and more as a means to save on large capital expenditures and meet tough time constraints. Our business model allows Aries to take on these burdens for the client so they can focus on their core competencies.

Aries Provides Temporary Campus After Flood

2019-02-08T20:18:16+00:00

One of the coolest things about modular buildings is their ability “save the day”, or in the case of Richwood County Middle School, a whole school year.

Richwood County endured significant flooding in the summer of 2016; a large portion of the county’s educational infrastructure was destroyed. With the beginning of the fall semester right around the corner, a quick and practical solution was needed.

Aries Buildings Systems, LLC developed a building plan that would serve as a temporary campus serving many of the school’s needs, including a cafeteria, band room, administrative space, classroom and science and math lab.

The Richwood Middle School modular classroom project put the Aries team to the test. David Jones, Aries Buildings Systems Mid Atlantic Regional Manager, stated that the team was faced with “challenging topography that varied over 20’ in elevation, coupled with limited access points, and harsh wet weather.”

In the face of these challenges, Aries built and installed 8 new custom buildings, spread across several acres. Students and faculty did not have to skip a beat, as Aries had the temporary campus completely ready for activity by the scheduled first day of class.

The high quality of Aries modular buildings guarantees the utility of the campus for a minimum of four years. Developing plans for permanent solutions to the flood damage has potential to be a lengthy process. In consideration of this, Aries went the extra mile to provide additional parking lots, site lighting, security fencing etc.

While plans for more permanent solutions are developed, Richwood County may rest assured that students and faculty have a safe and spacious campus to attend.

How to Choose a Modular Building Manufacturer

2019-02-08T20:23:02+00:00
how to choose a modular building manufacturer

So, you’ve decided to go modular. You are likely aware of the multitude of benefits that modular buildings offer (environmental friendliness, versatility, ability to relocate, etc.), but may feel less informed on how to choose the best modular building manufacturer. Just like when purchasing any other product or service, there are a few key factors to consider that will lead you to the best bang for your buck.

Building Quality and Versatility ✔

Start by browsing a potential manufacturer’s existing inventory to get a feel for available modular building designs and dimensions. A company with an expansive inventory may have just what you need, in which case you will be united with your new modular building in half the time.

A large, versatile inventory is a good sign, indicating the skill level and adaptability of the manufacturer. If a design that meets your unique needs is not available, the manufacturer should be able to work with you to develop a custom design.

It is also helpful to check out what interior features your potential manufacturer offers. If you need your modular building to “keep up with the times” with modern ventilation systems and technological features, there are manufacturers capable of meeting these needs. Computer facilities, security and video conferencing systems are just a few of the impressive features offered by top manufacturers.

Time-efficient construction methods ✔

While construction of modular buildings generally saves time compared to conventional construction, you can save even more time by choosing a manufacturer that employs alternative construction methods. This involves preparing the land to become a foundation for installation while building is in progress. This simultaneous workflow results in serious time-savings and accelerated delivery.

Cost Savings ✔

Of course, affordability is an important item on the checklist. While you are already saving money by going the modular route, you can save even more money by choosing a manufacturer that offers financing options. While gathering info on a potential manufacturer, make sure to explore the financing options. Don’t settle for less. Find one that is willing to work with you to develop a financing package for whatever suits your needs; renting, renting-to-own, etc.

Another good point of reference that can clue you in on a manufacturer’s cost efficiency is whether the company specializes in “turnkey” project completion. If yes, this means the design, manufacture, engineering, transportation and installation are all handled by the one company. No outsourcing is needed. For you this means significant cost and time savings.

Another advantage of project completion under one roof is improved quality control. One location, one experienced team, one point of contact to remember. It is easier and more efficient for everyone involved.

Maintenance ✔

A very important consideration when choosing a modular building manufacturer is whether the manufacturer has a site location permit. These permits allow the manufacturer to manage continued maintenance of the building and utilities, as needed. It makes much more sense for the experts that built the product to keep it in check, rather than hiring an outside source.

These key considerations can assist you in weeding through your options. A good starting point is Aries Building Systems, a manufacturer with a turnkey advantage and a lot of experience. Aries can be contacted at 888-995-0284 or [email protected].

New Year, New Modular Building Innovations from Around the World

2019-02-08T21:19:19+00:00

Festive 2016 Modular Building2016 brought all kinds of extraordinary modular building innovations into global focus. From “461 Dean” – the world’s tallest modular building in New York City, showing the world that modular design has the potential to make cities more affordable – to 3D printed modular structures, pop up modular construction, and recycled prefabrication solutions illustrating what innovations are peeking at us from over the horizon.

In November, 461 Dean became the world’s tallest modular building following a series of dramatic setbacks and challenges which ultimately put the ambitious project 10 millions dollars over budget, 2 years behind schedule, and gift wrapped in legal drama galore. However, the final product still stands taller than any other, and promises to bring an equally high level of financial relief to it’s inhabitants, both commercial and residential. In an area where the median rent is pushing $3,000 per month, a new building offering monthly rent in the $500 + zone is music to New Yorker’s ears. A new tune indeed, and an example has now been set to other cities: modular building has the potential to be a real solution. Although the delivery of 461 Dean didn’t go (even remotely) as planned, the world’s tallest building has set the stage for the rest of the world to not only “think outside the box,” but 32-stories worth of boxes.

Just beyond the shadow of the world’s tallest modular building, a handful of other interesting innovations have made their way into 2016. On the heels of a Chinese construction company erecting a partly modular skyscraper in 19 days, there have been many “feats of speed” in the modular building industry this past year. As we know, modular construction continues to increase in popularity because it’s built offsite using the same architectural designs and materials as traditional construction methods, and delivered and erected “turnkey” style – limiting environmental disruption, a multitude of safety issues, and creating less waste. The speediest of the modular innovations of recent? Pop up shops and flash modular. Temporary retail spaces that are easily moved from location to location and easily modified are on the trend. A great way for companies to perform test marketing, utilize seasonal business and event sales, and enjoy the savings associated with pop-up retail endeavors. Quickly becoming the as hip as it gets, modular spaces are providing mobile hair salons, cocktail parties, bar/restaurants, medical facilities, and even tiny modular banks.

And finally, we can’t talk about 2016 without mentioning how the year kicked off in the Netherlands; a country recognized for it’s inventiveness. The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam became the appointed location for ministerial meetings (high level official meeting venue) – in The Europe Building. A partially 3D printed modular structure, The Europe Building was created by local architects DUS, whom also garnered much attention years back for it’s 3D printed canal house project. In any case, we can say with confidence: We’ve seen the future. And it’s modular.

From the resident looking to save money on rent in New York City, to the city planner searching for ways to conserve space in Shanghai, China, to architectural trailblazers serving the Council of the European Union in The Netherlands, Aries Building Systems is a proud participant and innovator in their own right. Committed to providing cutting edge modular solutions to each and every customer, ABS is looking forward to a new year of delivering the highest standards possible.

The Aries Advantage Begins With Safety

2019-02-08T21:25:36+00:00

Modular medical clinic

With over 700 construction-related deaths this past year, it’s evident that safety is perhaps the most important factor on a construction site. As new technologies create more complexity in the construction industry, safety issues span beyond “the old days” of employee health and liability or insurance issues. Today, safety is a complicated affair.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 700+ construction-related fatalities, over 250 resulted from falls. This is where modular building comes to the rescue with the proverbial safety net. Since the prefabricated building process takes place offsite inside a factory, building each section piece by piece, the risk of falls is remarkably reduced. Modular construction eliminates precarious logistics and dangerous weather conditions.

With every project, Aries Building Systems establishes designated project safety personnel and puts forth a “site specific” safety plan as standard practice. In addition, Aries builds both commercial modular buildings and prefabricated residential buildings to meet both traditional safety standards and local building code to ensure that our rigid safety standards cannot be compromised.
